FUKUOKA – A wild boar led police in a savage chase through this southwestern Japanese city for much of the morning of August 5.
The animal was spotted near Ohori Park at around 6:05 a.m. by a member of the Fukuoka Prefecture Police riot squad on duty at the US Consulate, located next to the park in the city’s Chuo district. . The animal took off, with officers chasing it. Police attempted to trap the boar when it entered the grass near the park’s municipal museum, but managed to escape.
Then he made his way to the adjacent Maizuru Park, home to the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, and officers were chasing him through the center of town. He was finally captured just before noon.
According to the Chuo Police Station, the animal was about two feet long. There were two emergency calls in the early hours of August 5 to report sightings of wild boar in the jurisdiction of Sawara Police Station, neighboring Chuo Station to the west. Officers at Chuo Station believe the boar they captured was the one reported earlier today. Nonetheless, police have advised the public to be cautious, saying wild boars are “dangerous if they run recklessly around town and crash into people or vehicles.”
The head of countermeasures against wild animals and boars at the agriculture and forestry department of the Fukuoka municipal government said, “We have never seen any of these animals appear in Ohori Park.” Meanwhile, Kiyofumi Yasukouchi, a 62-year-old consultant at the city zoo, commented, âWild boars looking for other animals sometimes travel along waterways. Perhaps it was a young wild boar with little experience, who got lost in the city looking for food. ”
