Japan’s Ministry of Education boosts education for young Ukrainian evacuees

The Japanese Ministry of Education has called for flexible use of existing school support systems so that children of Ukrainian evacuees can study in Japan.

The ministry issued a notice to education authorities, such as municipalities and universities in Japan, on Monday.

It encourages flexible use of certain systems for Ukrainian children, as they have entered Japan in an emergency situation and will need special support until they find a stable base there.

The systems include financial aid to cover the cost of catering and school supplies that municipalities provide to primary and secondary school students from homes in economic difficulty.

The ministry also calls on prefectural officials to flexibly use a system to provide scholarship-like scholarships to high school students. Positive offers of secondary school tuition waiver or reduction schemes are also encouraged.

In the notice, the ministry presents a website with links to online resources of various organizations in several languages, including Ukrainian.

The ministry calls for assistance and the creation of an environment conducive to the health and emotion of the evacuated children, considering their difficulties.

The Ministry of Education offers a telephone consultation service on these issues in Japanese and English between 9:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. on weekdays. The telephone number is: 0120-082-434.
